Spring Detox Series: What is Detoxification?

Cleansing or detoxifying, is the process of eliminating toxins or waste products from the body.  Toxins can be the natural byproduct of digestion and elimination as we learned in yesterday’s blog, or they can be from combating acute or chronic illness and dealing with stress.  We also encounter daily toxins in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink.  There are over 80,000 chemicals that exist in commerce today.  Of those 80,000, 1% of those (632) are reportable to the EPA toxics release inventory (TRI).  50% of those are known or suspected neurotoxins.  We are constantly exposed to toxins throughout our daily lives. Want to get a tiny glimpse of the toxins that you are exposed to? Take the three most common things that you use everyday whether it be deodorant, tooth paste, hair products, make=up, lotions, etc. and run them through the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. You WILL be surprised! A study in 2009 tested the umbilical cords of 10 newborn babies for traces of chemicals, and they found over 200 chemicals in each cord!

Our natural routs of elimination: the intestine, liver, kidney, and skin can become overwhelmed with the daily burden of toxins found in our environment.  When they become overworked, they to can begin to produce poisonous byproducts.  A detoxifying diet can stimulate and accentuate our body’s innate detoxifying processes and allow optimal health.

A cleanse can lead to increased energy and result in improved health.  By cleansing the body, you can normalize pH, balance digestive function, facilitate tissue repair, and increase energy production.
