Why should I detoxify?
Detoxification is the process of neutralizing or transforming toxins into a less offensive substance. As a part of normal physiological function our body creates toxins that need to be eliminated, and it has set up the proper systems to do so. However, in today’s environment there are a variety of substances that contribute to the toxic load in our body. These include substances such as chemicals in our food and water from plastics and pharmaceuticals, pesticides in our food, chemicals used to refine foods, and heavy metals due to our industrialization. The amount of toxins that our body comes into contact with often exceeds our capability to eliminate them. This ultimately results in an accumulation of these toxins within our body.
Doesn’t my body detoxify all by itself?
The primary organs of elimination are considered to be the bowels, kidneys, liver, lungs, and skin. Secondary organs include stomach, pancreas, spleen, lymphatic system, mucosal surface, and the sex organs as well. These organs are designed to be highly effective at eliminating toxins in our body, but as with most things overuse can lead to dysfunction. In this day and age, it is impossible to avoid exposure to toxins, so organs like the liver become overwhelmed. When the primary organs of elimination are not functioning properly the secondary organs may take over. However, they are not as efficient at elimination, and may become overwhelmed and respond negatively to the extra stress. These organs can all become inflamed and chronic inflammation can lead to chronic disease processes.
Can’t I just follow an Internet detoxification protocol?
It is important to understand the interactions between the organs involved in the detoxification process and to maintain medical care during any detoxification process. There are a variety of therapies that we can prescribe to initiate the process of elimination; however, it is also important to make sure that the organs of elimination are healthy enough to endure a detoxification process. Many detoxification diets are effective at releasing toxins into the system, but do not assess the ability of that system to handle this increased load.
